Upminster, Essex

Upminster is a town in Essex. It is recorded in Domesday as 'Upmynstre'. Upminster remained a rural village until the early 20th century when Ilford developer Peter Griggs developed plans for a 'new town on a American plan' to the north of the village. Further suburban developments took place between the wars and in the 1950s and 1960s. Upminster Windmill is a restored smock mill dating from 1803. The Church of St Laurence, facing the village green, dates from the 13th century. The town is within the council area of Havering.
