Ulverston, Lancashire
Ulverston is a market town in Lancashire. It lies in the Furness area of the Lancashire North of the Sands portion of the county. Market Street is paved in local stone and has many fine buildings. Ulverston's most visible landmark is Hoad Monument, a concrete structure built in 1850 to commemorate Sir John Barrow, a local man who rose through extensive foreign travel to serve as Second Secretary to the Admiralty for 41 years. Ulverston Canal is no longer navigable, but it is claimed to be the deepest, widest and shortest canal in the United Kingdom. Ulverston is the birthplace of the comedian Stan Laurel. The town contains the Laurel and Hardy Museum and a statue of the duo outside Coronation Hall. Ulverston is within the council area of Westmorland and Furness.
