Uffington White Horse, Berkshire

The Uffington White Horse is a prehistoric hill figure on White Horse Hill near Uffington, Berkshire. The hill forms a part of the scarp of the Berkshire Downs and overlooks the Vale of White Horse. The monument appears as the side view of a stylised horse with its head to the right. The horse measures 365ft in length from tail to ear and about 130ft high. Recent excavations and analysis date the horse to the later Bronze Age or Iron Age. This could mean it is contemporary with the nearby Uffington Castle hillfort. Until the late 19th century, the horse was scoured every seven years as part of a more general local fair held on the hill. The monument is in the care of the National Trust. It is within the council area of Vale of White Horse (Oxfordshire).
Historic England Scheduled Monument 1008413.
