Tyrone, Northern Ireland
Tyrone is a rural county of Northern Ireland. The Sperrins, a range of quiet mountains and hills shared with Londonderry, occupy much of the north of Tyrone. They rise to 2,240 feet at Sawel. Elsewhere the county is almost entirely rural and agricultural. The main town Omagh sit in the centre of the shire at the confluence of the rivers Drumragh and Camowen. It has a quiet riverbank aspect. The flat peatlands of eastern Tyrone border the shoreline of Lough Neagh. Dungannon, in the south-east, was once the capital of the Kingdom of Ulster, overlooked by a hill on which a series of castles sat for many centuries. It is now a small market town. Strabane lies on the River Mourn in the north-west of the county, close to the Donegal border.
