Tynemouth, Northumberland
Tynemouth is a coastal town in Northumberland, located on the north side of the mouth of the River Tyne. Tynemouth Castle stands on a rocky headland. The moated castle-towers, gatehouse and keep are combined with the ruins of the Benedictine priory where early kings of Northumbria were buried. Sea-bathing from Tynemouth's beaches became fashionable in the late 18th century. King Edward's Bay and Tynemouth Longsands remain very popular beaches. The town is within the council area of North Tyneside.
