Twist Castle, Lancashire
Twist Castle is a Romano-British farmstead about a mile north-east of Worsthorne, in the parish of Briercliffe in Lancashire. Located at the western end of Twist Hill with extensive views over the surrounding area. A scheduled monument, it includes an earth and stone bank or rampart surviving up to 3ft 3in high, around a rectangular farmstead enclosure about 144 by 131ft, with an entrance on the eastern side. There would also have been an outer ditch but little trace now remains. Attached to the south-eastern side of the enclosure, next to the entrance, is 60 feet square annexe also with an earth and stone wall. A bronze coin of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180) was reportedly found here in 1888. It is within the council area of Burnley (Lancashire).
