Lying on the main road between London and the west (now Chiswick High Road), it was recorded as Turneham in 1235 and Turnhamgrene in 1369. Its most distinctive characteristic is its large village green, also named 'Turnham Green', on which stands Christ Church (1843), designed by George Gilbert Scott.
