Towneley Hall, Lancashire

Towneley Hall is a mediæval house situated within the southern end of Towneley Park in Burnley in Lancashire. The hall was the family home of the Towneley’s for nearly five centuries. The family once owned extensive estates in and around Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire. The male line of the family died out in 1878 and in 1901 one of the daughters, Lady O'Hagan, sold the house together with 62 acres of land to Burnley Corporation for £17,600. The family departed in March 1902. Major restoration work on the Hall and Park have taken place since then. The historic house has a museum that houses a variety of displays, encompassing natural history, Egyptology, local history, textiles, decorative art and regional furniture, together with an art gallery. It is currently owned, managed and financed by Burnley Borough Council. Towneley Hall is now a Grade I listed building with large museum and art gallery. It is within the council area of Burnley (Lancashire).
