Torrington, Great, Devon
Great Torrington (sometimes known just as Torrington) is a historic market town, standing on high ground above the River Torridge in north Devon. The manor of Torrington dates back to Saxon times. It became a borough in the 12th century. The Battle of Torrington (1646) marked the end of Royalist resistance in the West Country. The Church of St Michael and All Angels (C of E) dates back to the 13th century. The bell tower was blown up in the Civil War battle. Torrington Common, donated to the town in 1194 by the feudal baron of Great Torrington, surrounds the town on three sides. The town is within the council area of Torridge (Devon).
