Torquay, Devon

Torquay is a seaside resort town, lying at the northern end of Tor Bay in Devon. The first major building in Torquay was Torre Abbey, a Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1196, the monks of which built the first quay. Torquay remained a minor settlement, its economy based on fishing and agriculture, until the Napoleonic Wars when Torbay was used as a sheltered anchorage by the Channel Fleet. The arrival of the railway saw Torquay develop into a fashionable seaside resort, gaining the nickname the English Riviera. The Kents Cavern cave system is Britain's most important Stone Age site, home to early man for some 40,000 years. Writer Agatha Christie was born and brought up in the Torquay. The town is within the council area of Torbay.
