Topsham, Devon
Topsham is a historic port town, lying on on the east side of the estuary of the River Exe in Devon. The site was used by the Romans as a port to supply Isca Dumnoniorum (Exeter). It became a village in Saxon times and received a Royal Charter from Edward I in 1300. Topsham's position enabled it to thrive as a port, and a centre for fishing and shipbuilding. The town's many Dutch-style houses datE from the town's heyday in the 17th and 18th centuries, when Topsham was an important cotton port. Since the mid-20th century Topsham has become a desirable residential location. St Margaret's Church (C of E) has a 14th-century Gothic tower and a 19th-century Gothic Revival main structure. The town is within the council area of Exeter (Devon)
