Tooting, Surrey
Tooting in a metropolitan district in Surrey, forming a south-western suburb of London. Tooting began as two separate manors in two separate parishes that developed as two separate villages, though both along the Roman road Stane Street. The more northern manor became known as Tooting Bec following its endowment to the abbey of Notre Dame du Bec in Normandy. By the 16th century Tooting Bec (also known as Upper Tooting) was the largest village in the parish of Streatham. The southern manor came into the possession of the De Gravenel family and became known as Tooting Graveney (also known as Lower Tooting). The whole area saw large-scale development during the late Victorian period and the district of Tooting was created, though the two parts retains their distinct identities. The district is within the council area of Wandsworth.
