Todmorden Town Hall, Yorkshire / Lancashire

Todmorden Town Hall is a 19th-century town hall in Todmorden, lying partly in Yorkshire and partly in Lancashire. It was designed by John Gibson in the neoclassical style and opened in 1875. Todmorden is famous for lying partly in Lancashire and partly in Yorkshire. The Town Hall was purposefully built straddling the Walsden Water, the county border at this point. The pediment contains a finely carved tympanum which depicts two central female figures on a pedestal. The left-hand sculpture represents Lancashire (cotton spinning and weaving industries), and the right-hand one Yorkshire (wool manufacturing, engineering and agriculture). It is possible in the main hall to dance, forward and back, across the two counties. The hall is within the council area of Calderdale.
