Tiverton, Devon
Tiverton is a historic market town, standing at the confluence of the Rivers Exe and Lowman in the east of Devon. The town has Saxon origins. Tiverton Castle was first built by Richard de Redvers around 1106. Tiverton received a market charter from Henry III in 1257. The town grew rapidly with the rise of the wool trade in the 16th and 17th centuries. The town was largely destroyed twice by fires — once in 1598 (from a frying pan) and again in 1612 (the "dog fight fire"). Although the wool trade declined, the economy was boosted by John Heathcoat opening a lace factory in 1815, the Grand Western Canal reaching the town in 1814 and the Great Western Railway arriving in 1848. Tiverton Town Hall (1864) was designed by Henry Lloyd in the Renaissance style. The town is within the council area of Mid Devon (Devon).
