Tipton, Staffordshire

Tipton is a town in Staffordshire, in the heart of the Black Country. It is listed as 'Tibintone' in Domesday. Tipton was one of the key towns in the Industrial Revolution. The town's growth began when ironstone and coal were discovered in the 1770s. The Birmingham Canal arrived in Tipton in 1770 and over the next 50 years the town became the centre of a dense network of canals. The 19th century saw mass building of factories and digging of coal mines. For local government purposes, from 1895-1966, the ancient parish of Tipton was the basis of Tipton urban district (municipal borough from 1938). The town is within the council area of Sandwell.
