Thornton Hall, Durham

Thornton Hall is a 16th-century manor house at High Coniscliffe, near Darlington in County Durham. The house was built in about 1550 for Ralph Talbois. The Hall has seen many changes in respect of its architectural design and the original plan has undergone much modification. Styles of architecture to be seen at the Hall include Tudor, or late Gothic, Elizabethan, Jacobean and Georgian. The last of the Talbois died in 1606 and by about 1630 the manor had passed to Henry Bowes, Sheriff of Newcastle. The present owners have restored the two acre mediæval garden which has been opened to the public. It is now a farmhouse and a Grade I listed building. It is within the council area of Darlington.
