The Spa, Down

The Spa (or just 'Spa') is a village in County Down. It is within the townlands of Ballymaglave South and Ballymacarn South, in the civil parish of Magheradrool. The area was found to have a mineral spring in the late 17th century. In the 19th century, the Ker family of the nearby Montalto estate developed the area as a spa resort, building a pump house, the Assembly Rooms, a hotel and a labyrinth for visitors. Spa Presbyterian Church (1872) was designed by Young and Mackenzie of Belfast. Though the spa declined as a tourist destination in the 20th century, the mineral springs survive along with David Ker's restored pumps. The village is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
