The Old Hall (aka Gainsborough Old Hall) is a mediæval house in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, in the Parts of Lindsey. The Hall was primarily built by Sir Thomas Burgh II between the 1460s and 1470s and was the seat of the Burghs until 1596. It has played host to notable figures, including Richard III in 1484 and Henry VIII in 1541. It was later sold to the merchant Hickman family, who resided there until around 1730. It was developed into a fashionable Jacobean residence but the Hall subsequently fell on hard times. Parts of the hall served as a raucous theatre. Others were made into crammed tenements. It was even used as a pub. In the mid-20th century, local volunteers raised funds to restore Gainsborough Old Hall. The Great Hall has an impressive timber ceiling and the Mediæval Kitchen is one of the best-preserved examples in England. The Hall exhibits a blend of Tudor architectural styles, including brick and timber framing. There are panoramic views of Gainsborough and the River Trent from the top of the tower. It is within the council area of West Lindsey (Lincolnshire).
