The Kymin Round House, Monmouthshire

The Kymin Round House is a small, castellated Georgian building on the Kymin hill, near Monmouth, Monmouthshire. The Round House was built by a group of local gentlemen in 1794. Their picnic club met on this spot each week and wanted a place to continue picnicking in all weathers. The building originally featured a downstairs kitchen and upstairs banqueting room; stables and a bowling green were added later. Monmouth antiquarian and publisher Charles Heath recorded in his 1807 history 'Descriptive Account of the Kymin Pavilion and Beaulieu Grove with their various views' that ten counties could be seen from the Roundhouse: Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire, Glamorganshire, Breconshire, Montgomeryshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Radnorshire, Shropshire and Somerset. The Round House is in the care of the National Trust. It is within the council area of Monmouthshire.
