The Iron Bridge, Shropshire
The Iron Bridge is a cast-iron arch bridge across the Severn Gorge near Coalbrookdale, Shropshire. Opened in 1781, it was the first major bridge in the world to be made of cast iron. Its success inspired the widespread use of cast iron as a structural material. The bridge has given its name to the Ironbridge Gorge (i.e. the Severn Gorge) and the village of Ironbridge which grew up alongside it. It is within the council area of Telford and Wrekin.
