The Hardmans' House, Lancashire

The Hardmans' House is a Georgian terraced house at 59 Rodney Street, Liverpool, Lancashire. It served as the studio and home of photographer E. Chambré Hardman and his wife, business partner and fellow photographer, Margaret. It preserves intact the entire contents of a working photographic studio (operational from the 1930s through to the 1950s) such as backdrops, cameras, lights, props, darkroom and printing equipment. It also retains all the Hardmans' furniture and personal effects, including everyday items such as tins of food and packets of soap in the condition in which they were purchased fifty years ago.The majority of the house provided space for clients to wait, change their clothing and sit for photographs. Behind the scenes, the staff would be busy developing prints in the cellar and then preparing them to be sent to clients in the retouching room and mounting office. A large collection of photographs is on display, along with the equipment they used to take and develop the iconic images. It is within the council area of Liverpool.
