The Gas Office, Antrim

The Gas Office is a late-Victorian two-storey multi-bay building, built as offices for Belfast Corporation Gasworks, located on Ormeau Road in Belfast, County Antrim. It is within the townland of Malone Lower, in the civil parish of Shankill. Designed by Robert Watt, it was built around 1898 and is considered the most architecturally outstanding building of any gasworks in Ireland. For its length, this building is remarkably narrow and it is dominated by the substantial tower at its south end. Ornate brick specials, terracotta panels and sandstone dressings are used to good effect to enliven its exterior. The Gas Office was originally part of Belfast Corporation’s Ormeau Road Gasworks, at that time the largest gasworks in Ireland. Sympathetically converted into a modern office in recent years, the interiors remain largely intact. The building is within the council area of Belfast.
