The Derry Walls, Londonderry
The Derry Walls are the 17th-century city walls around the original core of the city of Londonderry, County Londonderry. The Derry Walls were built during the period 1613-1618 by The Honourable the Irish Society, as defences for early 17th-century settlers from England and Scotland. The Walls are approximately 0.9 mile in circumference and stand up to 26ft high. They form a walkway around the inner city and provide a unique promenade to view the layout of the original town which still preserves its Renaissance Style street plan. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
