The Deerbank, Essex

The Deerbank is an ancient earthwork in Norsey Wood, Essex. The wood is an ancient oak woodland which has been converted to mixed sweet chestnut coppice. Boundary earthworks survive to the east and south-east and around the southern perimeter of the Wood. Although 'The Deerbank' suggests that these relate to an ancient deer park, an alternative interpretation is that these are woodbanks, designed to prevent animals from entering and damaging the Wood. It is within the council area of Basildon (Essex).
Historic England Scheduled Monument 1019485.
