The Cursus, Wiltshire

The Cursus is a Neolithic linear earthwork enclosure surrounded by a bank and outer ditch, located around 700yds north of Stonehenge, Wiltshire. It is nearly two miles long and between 330ft - 490ft wide. Excavations have dated the earthwork to around 3500 BC, before the earliest phase of Stonehenge. Over forty cursus monuments are known in England. There is no consensus as to their purpose. It is within the council area of Wiltshire.
