Tavistock Abbey, Devon
Tavistock Abbey is a ruined Benedictine abbey in Tavistock, Devon. It is sited in the centre of the town on the north side of the River Tavy. The abbey was protected by a precinct wall which separated the religious community from those outside. It was in occupation from 974 until 1539. The monastic precinct wall survives over much of its southern and western circuit. The Abbots's Hall or Abbott's Chapel, in use as a non-conformist chapel since the 17th century, is considered to be the monastic infirmary hall. The Abbey Gatehouse survives with its notable 12th-century arches. The monument is within the council area of West Devon (Devon).
