Tamworth is a large market town, once a capital of Mercia - the hill on which its bold castle stands has been a fortress at least since those days. The statue of Queen Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians beneath its ramparts recalls her liberation of the town from the Danes. The division of Tamworth and the surrounding parish between Staffordshire and Warwickshire is believed to date from before the Conquest and very likely from the time the shires themselves were established. The boundary runs right through the centre of the town with Tamworth Castle being in Warwickshire and St Editha's Church in Staffordshire. The town is within the council area of Tamworth (Staffordshire).
