Sydenham, Kent

Sydenham is a former village that is now a metropolitan district in Kent, forming a south-eastern suburb of London. From ancient times, the village lay along the present-day Sydenham Road. Sydenham Wells developed to the north-west of this, around the springs there with alleged medicinal properties. These areas evolved into Lower Sydenham and Upper Sydenham following the construction of the Croydon Canal (1801). The coming of the railway in 1839 and the moving of the Crystal Palace (1854) to Sydenham Hill saw the area develop rapidly. It is within the council area of Lewisham.
