Sydenham, Down

Sydenham is a former village that is now a suburban area in east Belfast, County Down. It is within the townlands of Strandtown and Ballymisert, in the civil parish of Holywood. The settlement was developed from the mid 19th century as a fashionable suburb along the Holywood Road to the north of Gelston's Corner in Strandtown townland. The name, based on Sydenham in Kent, was chosen by James Entwhistle, who developed much of Sydenham. Sydenham Station opened as Ballymisert Station in 1851. By the start of the 20th century, the expansion of the Belfast urban area had efectively seen Sydenham become a suburb of east Belfast. St Mark's Church (C of I), designed by William Butterfield, was consecrated in 1878. The author C.S. Lewis was baptised here in 1899. The area is within the council area of Belfast.
