Swainby Abbey, Yorkshire

Swainby Abbey is the earthwork remains of a mediæval abbey at Swainby, Yorkshire, in the North Riding. It was founded in 1188 by Helewise, the daughter of Ranulph de Glanville, Sheriff of Yorkshire. Though her son, Ranulph Fitz-Robert, moved the community of canons to Coverham Abbey in 1212-14, the land at Swainby was retained as a grange. The surviving earthworks represent a remarkably well-preserved mediæval landscape, of interest for its mediæval settlement and field system remains as well as those related to the abbey and later grange. The monument is within the council area of North Yorkshire.
