Sutton, Surrey
Sutton is a town in Surrey. Sutton was a manor in Saxon times, listed as 'Sudtone' in a seventh-century charter, which then became a parish. The village itself remained a small settlement until the mid 18th century when its high street became part of the London to Brighton stagecoach route, with the Cock Inn becoming an important staging point. Following the opening of Sutton railway station in 1847, the village grew to a suburban town. The High Street mainly comprises Victorian and Edwardian architecture. St Nicholas Church (1864) stands on the site that has been used as the parish church since Saxon times. The town is within the council area of Sutton.
