Surbiton, Surrey

Surbiton is a suburban town in Surrey, lying along the River Thames to the south of Kingston upon Thames. Whilst the name Surbiton is of ancient origin, the modern town developed following the opening of 'Kingston-upon-Railway' station in 1838, around which Thomas Pooley developed the former Maple Farm estate. Renamed Surbiton in 1867, the current station building dates from 1938 and is famed for its modernist design. Surbiton is now a residential commuter town with housing from a mix of styles, notably the original grand 19th century townhouses, Art Deco courts and semi-detached 20th century estates. The town is within the council area of Kingston upon Thames.
