Sunbury, Middlesex

Sunbury (sometimes Sunbury-on-Thames) is a town in the Spelthorne area of Middlesex, on the River Thames. Sunbury is first attested to, as 'Sunnanbyrg', in an Anglo-Saxon charter c.962. The original village (now known as Lower Sunbury or Sunbury Village) lies on the river and saw substantial 20th century suburban development. The Sunbury Common area developed around Sunbury railway station and today houses many of Sunbury's businesses. St Mary's Church was rebuilt in 1752, replacing an earlier mediæval church. Kempton Park Racecourse lies east of the town. The town is within the council areas of Spelthorne district and Surrey county council.
