MenuSugar Island, Armagh
Sugar Island is an urban area in Newry, lying between the Clanrye River and the Newry Canal, in County Armagh. It is within the townland of Lisdrumgullion, in the civil parish of Newry. The island formed due to the construction of the Newry Canal (opened 1742). It became a centre for warehousing and trade in numerous commodities, notably for sugar. The area is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
