Stubbing Court, Derbyshire

Stubbing Court is a country house near Wingerworth, Derbyshire. It is built in the Georgian style, set in parkland and dating from around 1765. It is a symmetrical, two-storey country house with a sandstone ashlar facade. It features chamfered quoins, a pedimented central bay with a Diocletian window, and a grand entrance hall with a marble floor and a cantilevered stone staircase. The estate was primarily owned by the Gladwin family throughout most of the 18th and 19th centuries. A prominent resident was Major-General Henry Gladwin (1729-1791), a celebrated figure in American history for his defence of Fort Detroit during Pontiac's Rebellion in 1763. Other notable inhabitants included the Rt. Hon. James Abercromby, Speaker of the House of Commons from 1835-1839, who lived here in the 1830s. Olave, Lady Baden-Powell, the first Chief Guide, was born here in 1889. It is within the council area of North East Derbyshire (Derbyshire).
