Stroud Green, Middlesex

Stroud Green is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in the south-east of Hornsey, Middlesex. The earliest reference, to 'Stowde Grene', is from 1546. The hamlet developed at a cross-roads along the road from Crouch End to Highbury, at the bottom of Crouch Hill, lying partly in the ancient parish of Islington and partly in Hornsea. Stapleton Hall (now apartments) was built in 1609 for Thomas Draper. The area was developed from around 1870, the housing spreading north-eastward into Hornsey. The area is within the council area of Haringey and Islington.
