Stratford, Essex

Stratford is a town in Essex. Stratford's early significance is due to its location on the Great Essex Road, a Roman Road running from Aldgate to Colchester, the name referring to a ford across the River Lea. Stratford lay within the ancient parish of West Ham, just north of the village of West Ham. Stratford Langthorne Abbey (founded 1135, dissolved 1538) was one of the largest Cistercian abbeys in England. Once an agricultural area and a country retreat for the wealthy, Stratford grew rapidly as an industrial town in the 19th century. The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, venue of the 2012 Olympic games, lies west of the town on Stratford Marsh. The town is within the council area of Newham.
