Stranmillis, Antrim
Stranmillis is a suburban area in the south of Belfast, County Antrim. It is within the townland of Malone Lower, in the civil parish of Shankill. In 1606, Sir Arthur Chichester leased his Stranmillis lands to Sir Moyses Hill, who built a plantation castle, probably to control a crossing of the Lagan. The estate later became the Countess of Donegall's Deer Park, known as "Stranmellis Park". From 1770 most of the demesne was put up for lease. An area of 40 acres in the southern part of the former deer-park was leased by prominent merchants, the Black family, who built a summer residence, known as 'Stranmillis', around 1801. In 1857 this was sold to Thomas Batt who rebuilt Stranmillis House in the Gothic-Revival style. Stranmillis University College was opened within the estate in 1922. The area around the remaining estate was gradually developed as the Belfast suburbs spread southwards from the early 20th century. Stranmillis is within the council area of Belfast.
