Strandtown, Down
Strandtown is an urban area in east Belfast, County Down. It is within the townland of Strandtown, in the civil parish of Holywood. The townland of Strandtown remained almost entirely rural until the mid 19th century, with just a few dwellings around the main crossroads later known as Gelston's Corner. The mid 19th century saw further development around the crossroads and along Belmont Road, alongside the development of Sydenham to the north of the junction. The area was incorporated within the municipal boundaries of Belfast in 1896 and became fully urban in the early 20th century. Strandtown is usually considered to be the area around Gelton's Corner and to its south, stretching into Ballyhackamore townland. The art deco Strand Cinema opened in 1935. The area is within the council area of Belfast.
