Strabane, Tyrone

Strabane is a town, lying on the River Mourne in County Tyrone. The older parts of the town lie within the townland of Town Parks Of Strabane. In recent decades the town has expanded into the townlands of Magirr, Ballycolman, Castletown and Town Parks. The town is within the civil parish of Camus. During the Plantation, James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Abercorn, was granted land in the area and established the town around a castle he built, from around 1611. The River Mourne flows through the centre of the town and meets the Finn to form the Foyle River. A bridge across the Foyle linking Strabane, County Tyrone to Lifford, County Donegal was first built in 1730. The town is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
