Stormont Estate, Down
The Stormont Estate is a historic estate, now the seat of the Northern Ireland Assembly and the Northern Ireland Executive, situated between Belfast and Dundonald in County Down. The estate is within the townland of Ballymiscaw, in the civil parish of Dundonald. The Stormont Estate was established by the Reverend John Cleland (1755–1834) in the early 19th century. He built Stormont Castle in 1830. The Government of Northern Ireland purchased the estate in 1921. Stormont Castle ( HB26/13/014) became the headquarters of the Government of Northern Ireland and the official residence of the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. Stormont House (1926) ( HB26/13/017) was designed by Ralph Knott as the official residence of the Speaker of the House of Commons of Northern Ireland. Parliament Buildings ( HB26/13/013), designed by Sir Arnold Thornely in Greek classical style and opened by Edward, Prince of Wales in 1932, was the seat of the Parliament of Northern Ireland from 1932-1972. Since 1988 it has been the seat of the Northern Ireland Assembly. The estate is within the council area of Belfast.
