Stonehenge, Wiltshire
Stonehenge is a prehistoric henge and megalithic monument on Stonehenge Down, Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire. Stonehenge was constructed in several phases. The earliest phase, around 3100 BC, was the construction of the circular earth bank and ditch. The blue stones were brought to the site from around 3000 BC. The circle of large sarsen stones were placed between 2600-2400 BC. The blue stones were re-arranged into a ring, later horseshoe, around 2400-2200 BC. Stonehenge lies in the middle of the densest complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England. It is in the care of English Heritage. It is within the council area of Wiltshire.
