Stockwell, Surrey

Stockwell is a former village that is now a metropolitan district in Surrey, forming a south-western suburb of London. The manor of Stockwell was formed in the late 13th century, when King Edward I acquired the manor of South Lambeth and divided it into the two manors of Vauxhall and Stockwell. Stockwell developed as a village around Stockwell Green, between the Roman roads of Stane Street and the London to Portslade Way. In the 19th century it developed as an elegant middle-class suburb. St Andrew's Church dates from c. 1767. Theatre director Joan Littlewood was born in Stockwell in 1914. The district is within the council area of Lambeth.
