Stockton-on-Tees, Durham

Stockton-on-Tees is a market town in County Durham. It lies on the north bank of the River Tees. Stockton's market traces its history back to 1310. Shipbuilding started in the 15th century with smaller-scale industries also developing. The town grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. The Stockton and Darlington Railway (launched in 1825 by George Stephenson himself) was the world's first permanent passenger railway. The town is within the council area of Stockton-on-Tees.
