Stirchley, Worcestershire

Stirchley (formerly also known as Stirchley Street) is a suburban village in Worcestershire, forming a southern suburb of Birmingham. Stirchley developed as a hamlet along Icknield Street, a Roman road. It grew during the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially after the opening of Stirchley Street station in 1876 and alongside the development of Bourneville to its west. It became part of the municipal area of Birmingham in 1911 since when it has seen significant suburban development, but retains a distinct village identity. Stirchley Baths (1911), now a community centre, and Stirchley Free Library (1907) were built on land donated by the Cadbury brothers. Stirchley is within the council area of Birmingham.
