Stepney, Middlesex
Stepney is a metropolitan district which forms part of the East End of London, in south-east Middlesex. Stepney was an ancient pre-Conquest manor stretching from the eastern edge of London to the River Lea and from the Thames north to Stamford Hill. It later became a parish which in turn was split into numerous smaller parishes. St Dunstan's Church was founded in 952 by Dunstan himself, though it has been rebuilt twice since then. By the mid 19th century Stepney had become a small, sparsely populated area immediately around the church, though it was then caught up in the expansion of the East End along the Mile End Road and Commercial Road. It was massively damaged during the Second World War and subjected to large-scale redevelopment in the post-wat era. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
