Steng Cross, Northumberland
Steng Cross are the remains of an ancient Saxon roadside cross in Northumberland. It is located about two miles south-east of the village of Elsdon on the old drover's road to Morpeth. The cross base measures 2½ feet square and marks the highest point of the moor. It is also the location of a replica of a gibbet, where convicted murderer William Winter’s rotting corpse hung for many years (close to the place of the murder of Margaret Crozier) following his execution at Westgate in Newcastle in 1791. It is within the council area of Northumberland.
