Steelstown, Londonderry

Steelstown (aka Steel's Town) is a former hamlet that is now a northern suburb of the city of Londonderry, County Londonderry. It is within the townland of Shantallow, in the civil parish of Templemore. The name is believed to derive from the Steele family, planters in the area during the Plantation era. It remained a hamlet in open countryside until the mid 20th century, since when the area has seen large-scale suburban development, effectively becoming a northern suburb of Londonderry. The original hamlet, now known as Steelstown Village, survives within the larger suburban area. The area is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
