Stechford, Worcestershire

Stechford is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in the east of Birmingham, lying to the east of the River Cole in the Yardley salient of Worcestershire. Until the mid 19th century the hamlet (Stycheford) lay close to Stycheford Bridge over the Cole (which dates back to at least 1497). Following the opening of Stechford railway station in 1844, development began around the station, though the area remained predominantly rural well into the 20th century. The modern spelling 'Stechford' appears to date from the opening of the railway station, it being conjectured that this was a misspelling at the time. It is within the council area of Birmingham.
