Stanmore is a suburban village in Middlesex. The name was recorded in Domesday as 'Stanmere', a stony pool. It was later known as Great Stanmore, to distinguish it from Little Stanmore, to the south-east. In the Middle Ages, a monastic community of Augustinian Canons was established at Bentley Priory. Stanmore remained a small rural community until the late 19th century. The railways reached Stanmore in 1890 and suburban development followed, especially in the 1930s. Stanmore Hall (1940s) was built as a gothic castle. Stanmore is the location of the former RAF Bentley Priory station – base of the Fighter Command during both world wars – along with its accommodating Bentley Priory mansion. Stanmore is within the council area of Harrow.
